TEMPLE OF TRANSFORMATIONS

Trough at Abandoned Native American Village Site

THE SUN IN THE TROUGH

I want to take you down
to the stream which snakes
below the ridges crowned
by pounding stones.
Near a spring, a trough abides,
Sept. 23, 1924 scribbled in cement.
The sun sparks my crown in the trough,
illuminating my subtle body.
I want you to see
the sun at our crowns
radiating down
into our hearts.
That light joining
our hearts together
as ten minutes pass
or ten thousand years
until we remember
that we are as timeless
as water, blackberry
brambles, quail grass.

As the Fool was hiking through the forest, singing a song, he envisioned a golden equal-armed cross on top of a golden pyramid. The vision remained in his mind's eye for at least an hour. He was a little confused at first, but then he remembered that the golden balanced cross symbolizes the subtle spiritual elements in harmony with each other as the elements manifest in matter. As he strolled through the forest, in other words, he was experiencing the harmony of spirit manifesting in nature.

Guardian Angel

After the Fool entered the portal, he immediately encountered his Holy Guardian Angel. Space and time seemed to expand all around him.
"Do you remember my name?" the Guardian Angel asked.
"You are Atriel."
"Do you remember what my name means?" Atriel asked.
"In Hebrew, the first letter 'Aleph' means 'ox,' which represents the power and potency of the spiritual forces manifesting in nature. The second letter 'Tau' means 'cross' and it symbolizes not only the unfolded cube of space and time but the solidification of the four elements into manifestation as well as the sacrifice necessary to maintain harmony in the physical plane. 'Resh' is a solar letter pertaining to the energies of The Sun and the Emanation of Beauty 'in the head,' in other words in human consciousness. 'Yod' means 'hand' and symbolizes creative and directive energy and the means of action. The 'EL' at the end of your name of course means 'God.'"
"Let us now proceed," the Guardian Angel stated. "We are here today to review some of your most significant experiences of transformation."

Archangel Raphael

Atriel continued, "Do you remember the first time you invoked the Archangel Raphael?"
"Of course," the Fool replied. "I became immersed in a thought bubble of such astounding complexity, and I experienced such a profound sense of eternity, that I realized that some spiritual beings, like the Archangels and the Gods and Goddesses associated with the Tree of Life, make human beings seem like amoebas in comparison. Raphael, the 'Healer of God' associated with The Sun, has healed me and those close to me many times."

Archangel Michael

"And Michael?" Atriel asked.
"Michael is a great power of harmony who rules the Element of Fire," Nathan responded. "The Element of Fire burns away what no longer serves us and purifies the heart and mind so that we can experience the dimensions of Universal Consciousness."

Archangel Gabriel

"And Gabriel?" Atriel asked.
"Gabriel rules the Element of Water and blesses us by cleansing and purifying the dark recesses of the heart and mind. Gabriel eliminates the negativity in the subconscious mind so that the emotions remain pure and we can touch the dimensions of Universal Consciousness."

Archangel Auriel

"And Auriel?" Atriel asked.
"Auriel rules the Element of Earth. Through Auriel, we purify the foundational energies of the body so that we eliminate the negative energies that cause disease and disharmony. Without physical health, we cannot have emotional and mental health or touch the dimensions of Universal Consciousness."

Gaia: Mother Earth

"Do you remember your transformative experiences with Mother Earth?" Atriel asked.
"I have experienced absolute bliss many times in nature just by hiking through a forest or sitting on a rock next to a stream. But I also know that through sacrifice we can work with the spirit of the earth and the Archangels to heal humanity and the planet," the Fool responded.

Thoth

"Do you remember your transformative experiences with Thoth?" Atriel asked.
"I have envisioned many transformative spriritual symbols during meditation and ritual. Thoth is the Egyptian God of magic, writing, communication, arithmatic, medicine, and reckoning. As a Moon God, Thoth is associated with the Holy Ghost, and his transformative magic reveals spiritual principle through profound symbols that can be found in the Tarot and the glyph of the Tree of Life. Through these symbols, we can rise to higher awareness and touch the dimensions of Universal Consciousness."

Moon Goddess

"What about Moon Goddesses?" Atriel asked.
"Like Thoth, Moon Goddesses should also be revered as manifestations of the Holy Ghost. Because the ninth Emanation, known as The Foundation, is a sphere of form, we can peer into that dimension and see the spiritual symbols and archetypes that guide us on the paths of the Tree of Life."

The Magician: Mercury

"Please continue telling me about your transformative experiences," Atriel requested.
"Certainly. When I first began meditating, I purified my chakras, and after I purified my third-eye chakra, I began having visions of spiritual symbols, one of which was a gray infinity symbol, which I had never seen before," the Fool replied. "A few days later in a bookstore, I was drawn to a deck of Tarot cards. I purchased the deck, and after I opened it, I immediately found the figure of a magician with a gray infinity symbol hovering above his head. The Magician in the Tarot is associated with Mercury and the Eighth Emanation on the Tree of Life known as Splendor. Through the Tarot, I began my journey on the paths of the Tree of Life, which has completely transformed my life for the better."

Hathor

"Hathor is the Egyptian Goddess associated with the seventh Emanation of the Tree of Life. On a higher arc, Hathor is the celestial Goddess known as Isis. In the seventh Emanation of Victory, Hathor holds up a prism to the sun so that we experience the rainbow colors of spirit manifesting in nature," the Fool stated.

Venus

"Venus is the Roman version of Hathor. Through Hathor and Venus, we experience the rainbow colors of love and beauty and harmony."

Osiris

The Fool continued, "All Gods of the Tree of Life bring transformative energies into our realm. Osiris is an Egyptian sacrificial God associated with the sixth Emanation of the Tree of Life known as Beauty. Through sacrifice, we can know beauty and harmonizing love."

Jesus

"Jesus is a savior who brought a new commandment to humanity: 'Love one another.' He said 'Love your neighbor as yourself' and 'Love your enemy.' He emphasized love and through his great compassion sacrificed his own life to neutralize the dark forces and negativity in the world. Jesus, like Osiris, is also associated with the sphere of The Sun, the Emanation of Beauty," the Fool continued.

Horus

"Osiris, before he became the God of the Spirit World, was an Egyptian Pharaoh married to Isis. To usurp the Egyptian throne, Seth murdered and mutilated his brother Osiris. Isis collected the parts of the body of Osiris, and with the aid of Thoth, Nephthys, and Anubis, Isis resurrected Osiris. After the resurrection, Isis and Osiris conceived their son Horus, who went on to fight for justice and harmony in the realm," the Fool stated.

Mars

The Fool continued, "Mars, the Roman version of Horus, is also associated with the fifth Emanation of the Tree of Life known as 'Power.' Mars is a God of War who establishes and maintains harmony by establishing and maintaining justice. Mars remains on the side of the underdog who is fighting for a righteous cause."

Zeus

"Each culture represents the same subtle transformative forces in different ways. The Greek God Zeus represents the fourth Emanation of the Tree of Life known as Mercy or Glory. Zeus is the chief God in ancient Greek mythology and the ruler of the Olympian gods. He is the god of the sky, thunder, law, and order, and represents the great upbuilding forces of civilization that have transformed humanity," the Fool said.

Jupiter

"Like Zeus, the Roman God Jupiter could shape the course of events on earth and determine the destiny of humanity," Nathan said. "Both of them reveal the magnificence, harmony, and abundance of the human spirit and the energies of the fourth Emanation of the Tree of Life."

Mother Mary

The Fool continued, "Like Isis, Mother Mary experienced many sorrows. As a virgin, Mary conceived her son Jesus. Mary experienced immaculate conception because her spiritual energies exist above the planes of manifestation. Both Isis and Mother Mary are associated with the third Emanation of the Tree of Life known as 'Understanding, which is in the heavenly realm above the Abyss.

Saturn

"Saturn, a God of the Harvest, is also associated with the third Emanation. Saturn, the Father of the Gods, created primordial form. All form dissolves, so the planes of form are associated with sorrow, yet Saturn, through the discipline of the plane of form, can bring great transformation and enlightenment. In our physical state, we can experience the dimensions of Universal Consciousness, especially now in the Age of Aquarius."
Atriel smiled. "Remember these transformative experiences as you build your inner temple."

Ithuriel's Spears, Fiesta Flowers, Chinese Purple Houses
ONE PATH

In the shade, the ravishing late spring flowers,
tier upon tier of Chinese purple houses, interwoven
with pink fairy lanterns, crowned by umbels
of evenly spaced Ithuriel's spears. Where
the embankment slopes steeply, I climbed
onto a rock by the rushing water. I felt dizzy,
leaning into poison oak. Women had ground acorns
in a stone at the confluence of those creeks.
I had never been there before, but I
somehow knew a path would lead me
to another rock with mortars, above me
on a ridge. I found the path
a few feet away running below
the branches of a huge oak.
I don't know if we can return
to people and places we love,
but on that one path I was part
of tapestries forever changing,
the threads eternal,
not bound by time.
A kaleidoscopic blue and pink
and purple, the penstemon flower bloomed
where the path met with the other
village site, and I lost myself
in the shade, near
the pounding stone,
near the pounding stone.
DIVINATION PATH
Gypsy
As the Fool was hiking along a path one day, singing a song, he encountered a gypsy, who offered to give him a Tarot reading.
"Sure!" the Fool responded. "What kind of spread will you be using?"
"A three-card spread that reveals the past, present, and future," the gypsy replied.

Portal One

"I must warn you, however. This is a magical path with portals that transport you to other dimensions. The decan correspondence and the Tree of Life Association in each card will open the portals for you. No need to worry, though. In the end, you will return to this path."
The Fool suddenly noticed an archway over the trail that resembled a portal.

Energized Portal

The gypsy continued, "If you are ready, I will draw the first card. Ahhh, the Nine of Swords, Mars in Gemini, The Moon in the foundation." The portal suddenly pulled the Fool into it.

Nine of Swords: Mars in Gemini, The Moon in The Foundation (Yesod)

On the other side of the portal, the Fool encountered the Nine of Swords. Somehow, he could still hear the gypsy's voice: "A decan, as you know, represents ten degrees of the zodiac and includes the subtle forces of the associated zodiac sign and planet. The Tree of Life association refers to the Emanation on the Tree of Life associated with the subtle forces. The Tree of Life is a glyph that reveals the subtle dimensions of Universal Consciousness. The Tree of Life also exists within you. That is how you are made in God's image."

The Tower: Mars

The gypsy continued, "This card represents the past, which reveals that at some point you have experienced depression or despair. Let's start with the decan. Mars is the God of Power associated with the fifth Emanation on the Tree of Life. Mars can be a disruptive force, but if used wisely, the subtle force can bring harmony and balance into one's life. You can see that the person in the Nine of Swords is experiencing despair, and the swords suggest that the person is projecting his negativity out at others. Mars, associated with the element of Fire, can be a purifying force that eliminates negativity and establishes balance through justice.

The Lovers: Gemini

"Once you purify your heart and mind and negativity is eliminated, you can regain paradise, in other words, you can feel a clear connection with the dimensions of your psyche: the divine core, the soul, as well as a masculine and feminine duality in the psyche, which exists within the Kingdom," the gypsy stated.

The High Priestess: The Moon

The gypsy continued, "But don't forget the Tree of Life Association, in this case The Moon. The Moon represents a deep connection with the subtle forces represented by the paths of the Tree of Life. Through those connections we touch the dimensions of Universal Consciousness and transcend the darkness that can overwhelm us in this plane. So despite the darkness of the Nine of Swords, you can also see that the card symbolically presents a way to move beyond despair and negativity. Mars can burn away negativity and purify the mind so that you know the divinity of your divine core and touch the dimensions of Universal Consciousness.

Portal Two

"I am now going to draw the second card, which represents the present," the gypsy stated. "Nice. The Three of Cups, Mercury in Cancer and Saturn in Understanding, which is 'Binah' in Hebrew." Suddenly the Fool noticed another portal ahead on the path, which became energized and pulled him in.

Three of Cups: Mercury in Cancer, Saturn in Understanding (Binah)

Suddenly the Fool was standing near three dancing women who were holding up golden cups during what appeared to be a harvest festival. The gypsy continued, "Again, let's start with the decan correspondence: Mercury in Cancer.

The Magician: Mercury

"Mercury is the messenger of the Gods, so naturally on one level the God represents communication. Mercury is the Roman version of the Egyptian God Thoth, who represents the Logos, the meaning at the heart of all creation. Through Mercury, human beings can create forms in their imagination that can manifest through dance and the arts and can also create abundance and harmony within communities and society as a whole. Through the recognition of the harmony, magnificence, and abundance of the human spirit and an understanding of the meaning of the Logos, human beings can overcome despair, which you apparently have done," the gypsy stated.

The Chariot: Cancer

Suddenly the Fool saw a knight in a chariot drawn by two sphinxes. The gypsy continued, "Once you have purified your subconscious mind, you are ready to experience the spiritual dimensions. Notice that the knight is leaving the castle. The knight is on a quest to experience the dimensions of Universal Consciousness, which in many ways frees people from the mind-forged manacles of human civilization. We truly know through the quest that we are multi-dimensional, expansive spiritual beings--divine facets of Universal Consciousness.

The World: Saturn

"The Tree of Life Association is Saturn, the God of Abundance. Saturn, who on the Tree of Life is Mercury on a higher arc, represents the manifestation of primal form. Through Mercury, the human mind creates forms within the imagination. Saturn is the basis for diversity and abundance within the physical cosmos, the One within the Many within the Kingdom. Without Saturn and Mercury, we would not be able to manifest the forms within our imagination in the physical plane. Those forms would remain as dreams within our minds. Saturn establishes the basis for physical form and Mercury enables us to create forms in our imagination so that we create the world every moment. Through Saturn and Mercury, we become co-creators with the Source in this plane of existence.

Portal Three

"I am going to draw the third card now, which represents the future. This card bodes well for you, my friend, the Nine of Pentacles, Venus in Virgo, the Moon in The Foundation. The Moon obviously has a powerful influence on you." Suddenly another portal opened and pulled the Fool in.

Nine of Pentacles: Venus in Virgo, The Moon in The Foundation (Yesod)

The Fool was soon standing near a woman holding up a hooded hawk in her left hand and touching a golden pentacle with her right. The gypsy continued, "Again, let's begin with the decan correspondence: Venus in Virgo."

The Empress: Venus

"Venus is the Goddess of Love associated with the seventh Emanation of the Tree of Life known as Victory. Venus holds up a prism so that the light of The Sun breaks up into the colors of the rainbow. Through this prism, we know the One within the Many and the Many in the One. Through our love of creation, we come to know 'The Marriage of Heaven and Earth, which is the mythological principle associated with Venus. Through our love of creation, we can create a world of beauty, abundance, and harmony."

The Hermit: Virgo

Suddenly the Fool was standing near a Hermit on a mountain top. "Notice the six-sided star in the Hermit's lamp," the gypsy stated. "The Hermit, in his solitude, is doing the inner work and has achieved a great height, and the hexagram, which represents the four elements, which include the triplicities of the zodiac and their ruling planets, has lit his way. The Hermit has experienced the subtle forces within the dimensions of Universal Consciousness, which has enabled him to reach the top of the mountain.

The High Priestess: The Moon

"And don't forget the Tree of Life Association," the gypsy reminded the Fool. "The Moon Goddess represents the Holy Ghost of the Foundation, the ninth Emanation of the Tree of Life. With Venus, we feel the unseen subtle forces within creation. With Mercury, we create concrete ideas and images of the subtle forces. With The Moon, we manifest those concrete ideas and images in the imagination. From there, we can manifest the subtle forces as we create our world. If we manifest the ideal energies of the subtle forces, we can manifest a world of harmony, magnificence, and abundance."

Meditating by the Stream
DIMENSIONS
HOLES

Near a series of smooth holes
in the rock, we sat quietly
for hours, not catching
anything. In one hole, a butterfly edged
on the slick surface toward stagnant water.
In another, two butterflies hung frozen,
wings open, the web
barely visible against gray stone.
You died a week later. Twenty years,
and the butterflies are here again.
The stone is cool and smooth,
almost comfortable enough
to sleep on. In another twenty years
I will wake, the same
age as you,
the water still flowing
into the deep pool as we gaze
at the buckeyes, the butterflies
rising and falling, our bodies
still shadows in the flowing water.
When the Fool was a boy, he discovered that he could experience absolute bliss when he stretched out on a rock next to a stream as sunlight glittered on the water and the rocks and the leaves. He could experience a bliss that cleansed his mind, a kind of heaven on earth as he immersed himself in nature and tuned his mind to the subtle spiritual energies that exist in the physical world and other dimensions. His family members would sometimes make fun of him, but he didn't care. Years later, as he hiked next to a river, the Fool remembered that when he was a boy, one morning his father woke him up early, and they went fishing together for the first time. The Fool had stretched out on a rock while his father silently fished. His father died a week later. Thanks to that memory, as the Fool gazed at the river, he sang a song about "holes."

Infinity Symbol

As he was growing up, the Fool was forced to conform more and more to the hierarchical structures and systems of power in his society, and he became more and more negative about the people and the world around him. He eventually realized that this negativity was destroying his sense of well-being, and because of his blissful experiences as a youth, he understood that he needed to cleanse his heart and mind. He began by purifying his chakras, the energy centers in his aura. One day as he was meditating, he had a vision of a gray infinity symbol above his head. He envisioned the symbol so clearly that he thought he was seeing it with his eyes open, and he blinked. The infinity symbol disappeared.

The Magician: Mercury

A few days later, the Fool visited a bookstore. Normally he would search for a good novel or book of poetry, but that day he was inexplicably drawn to the New Age section. He found the Universal Tarot Deck and an insightful book about the Tarot. The cashier stated while ringing up the purchase, "I've been thinking about getting back into the Tarot myself."
"Synchronicity," the Fool replied.
The cashier smiled and handed the Fool his receipt.
As the Fool was driving away, he wondered why the word 'synchronity' had popped out of his mouth. "I don't even really know what the word means," he muttered out loud. He was running errands, and he parked in front of another store. He decided to check out the book and the Tarot deck before going inside the store. He turned immediately to a page with an old black and white photograph of a dignified man. The caption identified the man as Carl Jung. The Fool skimmed the page and soon noticed the word 'synchronity.' The Fool read the paragraph and discovered that Jung had coined the word synchronicity to describe how two or more related events are often connected by meaning, not just causation. The Fool then opened his new Tarot deck. The second card in the deck, known as The Magician, depicts a gray infinity symbol above the Magician's head, exactly like the one the Fool had envisioned during meditation a couple of days earlier. "A perfect example of synchronicity!" the Fool thought. He soon discovered that The Magician card is associated with the Logos, a words that denotes 'meaning,' in other words, the meaning that has continued to unfold every moment since the beginning of creation. He also discovered that the Tree of Life is an expanded version of the primary chakra system. The Fool had spent many months purifying those energy centers in his aura. He had eliminated the negativity from each primary chakra, but he often still discovered darkness in one or more chakra during his meditations since the world is so full of negativity.

Golden Equal-Armed Cross

During meditation, the Fool kept having a vision of a golden balanced cross with an angel at each end. One angel wore a yellow robe, another wore a red robe, another wore a blue robe, and the fourth wore a white robe. He soon discovered that his vision symbolized the structure of two important occult rituals, one known as The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, the other known as The Supreme Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram. Both of them are based on the balanced cross. In the ritual, an archangel stands at the end of each arm of the cross, Archangel Raphael, representing the element of Air, in a yellow robe; Archangel Michael, representing Fire, in a red robe; Archangel Gabriel, representing Water, in a blue robe; and Archangel Auriel, representing Earth, in a white robe. "Another synchronicity!" the Fool blurted out. "Either that, or I see the symbols in the spiritual dimension and soon discover their meaning in the 'real' world." The Fool soon began incorporating related Tarot cards in The Supreme Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram, and with a purified heart and mind, he began feeling bliss again. He even began having sustained visions of a golden balanced cross on top of a golden pyramid in his mind's eye while hiking through the forest.

Lotus

One day during the purification process, after dumping garbage out of his crown chakra for hours, the Fool envisioned a brilliant white flower with four petals. Suddenly in his vision the flower bloomed into a gleaming white flower with innumerable petals. He thought at first that the flower was a white rose, but a voice in his head clearly stated, "Lotus." The Fool did a little research and soon discovered that the thousand-petaled lotus is a symbol associated with the crown chakra. "Another sychronicty," the Fool chuckled. He decided that the four-petaled flower in his vision represented the four elements of the wise, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, like the balanced cross in the occult rituals he had discovered. Each of the elements is associated with a triplicity of the zodiac and their related planets, and he concluded that the balanced cross and the Archangels together represent all of the subtle energies of the Tree of Life.

Spirit of Place near a Stream

The Fool even began feeling the energies of overarching spirits of place, especially in pristine areas of the forest. In one place with a small stream, the Fool felt a loving, almost maternal spirit of place. Based on her energy, he could tell that the spirit loved all creatures in her domain. The Fool was an intruder, but she seemed to emanate a strong feeling of affection for him. He couldn't figure out why until he found a Native American pounding near the stream. The Native Americans must have revered their spirit of place, possibly for thousands of years, and the spirit no doubt retained extremely positive memories of them. The Fool did some research on 'spirit of place' and discovered that the Romans called the spirit of place 'genius loci,' and often depicted the spirit of place holding a libation in one hand and a snake, symbolizing rebirth, in the other.

Angry Spirit of Place

Occasionally the Fool would encounter an angry or resentful spirit of place, especially in places disturbed or ruined by humans. Other times a spirit of place felt terrifyingly wild or primeval as it protected its territory. The Fool realized that humans need to recognize the spiritual dimensions of nature and establish a reverential connection with each spirit of place. The Fool could understand how some spirits might have a negative reaction to human beings, given how the human race has disrespected and despoiled the natural world for so many centuries, in so many places.

Mountain Lion

On one hike, the Fool began to feel like he was being watched, and he unbuttoned the sheath of his buck knife. Suddenly the Fool envisioned a mountain lion in his mind's eye. He took a few more steps forward and saw a mountain lion next to the trail about to pounce on a squirrel. The Fool stepped back slowly and returned to his car, wondering how he could have known that he was near a mountain lion. "Perhaps I connected with the spirit of the mountain lion in some other life. Perhaps the mountain lion was once my power animal," he thought to himself as he drove home.

Ghost

One day, the Fool went hiking with a couple of other people. They eventually stopped to rest on a rock near the river. Suddenly a pale, spindly man with a rifle walked right by them. The man was wearing clothes that seemed to be from the late 1800's. The man didn't say a word to any of them. "Did you see that man?" the Fool inquired. Both of his friends claimed that they hadn't seen any other people during their hike. "But he just walked right by us," the Fool replied.
"Maybe you just saw a ghost," one of his friends chuckled.
"Maybe so," the Fool replied. "I just can't believe you didn't see him!"

Gnome-like Creature

Another day, the Fool was hiking by himself through a pristine area and suddenly came upon what at first seemed like a large raven, but the creature didn't move. It just stood there, blinking one eye, then the other. Suddenly the Fool could tell the creature was a small man, less than two feet tall, who was wearing a cloak of raven feathers. The Fool wanted to communicate with the gnome-like creature, so he took one step forward, and the gnome rushed at him and ran around him three times and then vanished into the woods. The creature seemed ancient, but he was as fast as any wild creature that the Fool had ever encountered. The Fool was standing in plants with huge leaves that he had never encountered before. The gnome hit the stalks of the plants, making them shake, as he circled around the Fool. Perhaps the creature was only trying to scare the Fool, but the gnome could have done some serious damage. The gnome might have been inviting the Fool into the faery world, or perhaps he was signaling that the Fool should leave his territory. The Fool never returned to the area.

Nature Spirit

The Fool has often encountered nature spirits that he personified as faeries in his mind's eye. He began to realize that the mind has the tendency to personify unseen subtle spirits as people, which is why gods and angels and faery folk and demonic forces are so often depicted as human-like beings. "We can feel their energy if we are open and free of negativity, but we anthropomorphize so that they appear as people or animals, as something we can understand," he thought to himself. "The imagination deals with energies in the unseen spiritual realms through personification."

Native American Village

The Fool developed a sixth sense as he was hiking through the mountains. He could often sense when he was near a Native American village site. Sometimes he envisioned the village in his mind's eye, almost as if he was seeing the past, then he would find pounding stones and house pits, sometimes even pestles on the pounding stones. "Am I actually experiencing retrocognition or am I sensing an ancient presence that remains here?" he wondered out loud.

God of the Hunt

One day, the Fool was standing in a Native American house pit and unexpectedly felt compelled to run after something. Suddenly he heard a deer crash through the brush near him. The Fool turned and saw in his mind's eye a god of the hunt. "I'm way too out of shape to chase that deer," the Fool muttered, and the god laughed. "The Native Americans must have connected with spirits who would help them and personified the spirits as gods in human form. Those spirits are still here even though the people long ago vanished," the Fool thought to himself.

Thief

One day the Fool left his car parked on the side of a mountain road and hiked into an isolated foothill valley. After he had hiked several miles, he suddenly knew that a thief was breaking into his car--even though he was too far away to perceive the break in. The Fool plopped down on a stone and mourned about all the evil in the world. He returned to his car and discovered that a thief, or a disgruntled landowner, had broken a window and rifled through his glove compartment. The Fool was extremely pissed off as he drove home with chilly wind circulating through the car, thanks to the broken window. Later, he realized that his physical senses could not have possibly perceived the break-in since he had been so far away, which meant that the mind through intuition can transcend space and time. "Perhaps our minds are not imprisoned by the physical senses," the Fool thought.

Singer

Another day, the Fool hiked along a stream with a friend. They stopped to rest on a sandy bank, and she began to read out loud a passage about how people live as if they are traveling through a tunnel, and they might hear and see something other people don't perceive. Suddenly the Fool could hear a singer close by. The singer's voice was so loud that the Fool could barely hear what his friend was reading. As the singer was belting out songs in a different language, the Fool occasionally exclaimed, "That's amazing!" and he decided to search for the singer after seven or eight songs. The Fool searched the area for awhile until the music ended. He couldn't find anyone. Soon he and his friend returned to the city.
The Fool and his friend returned to the same place about two months later. "Wasn't that singer amazing?" the Fool asked his friend.
"What singer?" his friend asked.
"You know, that guy who sang so beautifully while you were reading to me. His voice was so loud I had trouble understanding you sometimes," the Fool replied.
His friend gave him a funny look. "I have never heard anyone singing by this stream or any other stream. I have no idea what you're talking out!" she blurted out.
"You didn't hear him? That's impossible!" the Fool retorted.
She didn't look at him or talk to him for the rest of the day.

The Cosmos in the Blackness of Space

Suddenly the cosmos collapsed into one bright light floating in the blackness of space and grew smaller and smaller until it was only a tiny point of light. Though Shiva is considered a God of destruction, the Fool felt a sense of liberation, realizing that from one perspective the entire cosmos is just a point of light.

Spirit of the Earth
SPIRIT OF THE EARTH
BEFORE THE DAM

We trudged on the cliff down the trail into the canyon
with jewels in the grass gleaming all around us.
We brushed lips as dippers rose and fell,
diving and submerging. A shadow flowed
through brilliant leaves and merged
on bare arms. We sprawled, half-dressed,
in a shallow house pit, near a pounding stone
with deep mortars--like eyeless sockets
gazing up at the sky before a shadow
submerged the canyon. The last
eagles glided over and spiraled high,
roots pulling tribes up from the soil,
high into branches, to flow in an ocean
of breath, as night flooded the gorge.
One day, he explored the woodland forest after a conflagration. Baby blue eyes and popcorn and fiddleneck blanketed the hillsides, and he felt a peace beyond understanding, a sense of unity underlying all of creation, but he knew that a dam might destroy the entire region, so he sang a song as he hiked into the canyon.
Baby Blue Eyes, Popcorn, and Fiddleneck

As he felt the tranquil spirit of the earth, a strange image arose in his imagination. Even though he felt deep peace, the Goddess, as she appeared in his mind's eye, seemed almost alien.

Moon Goddess

The next day, he traveled to the beach. As the moon rose, he had a vision of the Moon Goddess, who showed him the symbol of the fleur de lis. He didn't understand the symbol, so he did some research and discovered that the fleur de lis bloomed from the tears of Eve as she and Adam left Eden. The pure whiteness of the flower suggested the underlying unity of existence, which, he realized, symbolizes the eventual return to Eden.
